Tiger Woods is back in the news, but not for anything that has to do with golf.
The 15-time major champion was arrested on Friday after a rollover crash near his home in Florida. Authorities said he showed signs of impairment at the scene, although a breathalyzer test found no alcohol in his system.
The incident happened less than two weeks before the Masters, which takes the focus off competition and puts it on serious legal and health concerns.
What happened on the road in Jupiter Island?

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened on March 27 on a two-lane road close to Woods’ house.
Woods was driving a Land Rover when he tried to pass a work truck that was pulling a trailer. His car clipped the trailer and rolled over onto its side.
During a press briefing, Sheriff John Budensiek talked about what happened:
“He was overtaking a work truck pulling a trailer at high speed when he clipped the back of it, causing his vehicle to roll onto its driver’s side.”
Before help arrived, Woods got out of the car on the passenger side. There were no injuries.
What Deputies Found at the Scene
The decision to arrest Woods was based on observations and field tests conducted at the scene.
During a press conference, Sheriff John Budensiek gave an overview of the investigation:
“DUI investigators came to the scene here, and Mr. Woods did exemplify signs of impairment. They did several tests on him. Of course, he did explain the injuries and the surgeries that he had. We did take that into account, but they did do some in-depth roadside tests,” Sheriff John Budensiek said.
Authorities confirmed that Woods’ breathalyzer test showed no alcohol in his system, which shifted the focus to possible impairment caused by medication.
Why DUI Charges Still Apply Without Alcohol
Even though no alcohol was found, the charges went forward based on signs of impairment observed at the scene and Woods’ refusal to submit to additional testing.
During the briefing, Budensiek also talked about this part of the case and made it clear how the charges were decided:
“We really weren’t suspicious of alcohol being involved in this case, and that proved to be true at the jail. … But when it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused. And, so, he’s been charged with DUI, with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test,” Budensiek said.
Woods was held for approximately eight hours before being released, as required under Florida law.
Woods’ Condition at the Scene
After the crash, authorities said Woods was physically stable but appeared sluggish.
Sheriff John Budensiek noted that Woods showed signs of impairment at the scene. No injuries were reported.
What this means for the Masters and the future
The timing leaves little doubt about Woods’ immediate playing future.
Because he was still recovering from several surgeries, it was already unlikely that he would play in the Masters, which starts on April 9. This event clears up any remaining doubts.
More generally, it makes us think about:
- His physical condition
- Medication use tied to long-term injuries
- The likelihood of a long-term return to competitive golf
Donald Trump reacts publicly
Donald Trump, the former president of the United States and a longtime friend of Woods, spoke about the situation soon after it became known.
“I feel so badly. He’s got some difficulty,” Trump said. “There was an accident, and that’s all I know. Very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person, an amazing man, but some difficulty.”
Trump didn’t say anything else about Woods’ condition.
Past incidents raise questions
This incident adds to a long list of driving problems that Tiger Woods has had, such as a DUI arrest in 2017 and a serious rollover crash in 2021 that hurt his legs badly
Authorities haven’t directly linked the current case to past ones, but the similarities have brought attention back to his problems off the field.
What happens next
The charges will be decided by the legal system, and Woods has not yet made a public statement.
Some important things to keep an eye on are:
- Any official response from Woods or his people
- More information about the suspected substance involved
- Possible response from the PGA Tour or sponsors
- A timeline for when he might be able to compete again
The focus has completely changed for now.
One of the most significant figure in golf is once again being asked questions that go beyond the sport.
